Skipping beats…

August 22nd, 2007

I’m finally back at work!

I’ve made my way through five and a half weeks of vacation, which could be quite fun…
…BUT…

I started out with two and a half weeks and after that I would go back to work. However, during those two weeks I got a good offer from another game developer and felt it was time to move on. So, returning to work, I was suddenly about to quit and leave.
Actually - I wanted to start at my new place as soon as possible but my period of notice was still going to be one month. I was away on vacation, visiting my parents and wasn’t really going to go back home for another one and a half week…

So, I quit over phone.

Yeeees… well…
Not the best thing I’ve ever done - not really the cleanest break. And considering my bosses would dislike the usual face-to-face resignation, I can only imagine how they felt getting a mail and a resignation over the phone. In fact… Since I expected a not-so-pleasant response, I actually phoned my producer (since he’s actually a person you can have a nice and honest conversation with without judgement and red-eyes-of-doom) to tell him and let him “calm them down” before the real mail appeared.
Feeling a bit bad about all that I explained it all in more detail in a mail to them and apologized - only to get a really “hurt” reply where they, very clearly, stated that they were the true victims.

Unsure of wether I’d have to work for another three weeks when I returned, I entered the office after my vacation. After the initial “Go to hell and get out of my office” comments from one of my bosses - I actually got a nice (and cooled down) chat with him. It felt pretty good after that, although a lot of the chat consisted of him badmouthing the company I was about to go to, me, my previous work and all other games in the history of games. Of course, the only good game was the one he was working on (being the one I was leaving).
But I guess I never expected anything more than that.

Good thing though was that I actually got to go the same day.
So, packing my stuff and saying bye to my colleagues - I just went home.
(And then I spent the three paid weeks painting tables, chairs, fixing things in the apartment and getting my inspiration back…)

A truly empty feeling, although relieving, but I truly missed many of my great colleagues.
I still do, three weeks later - but that’s bound to happen when you spend most of your waken time for two years with a whole bunch of like-minded people.

So to my old friends over there - take care y’all - I’ll miss you.

And to my new colleagues (who so far seem like a bunch of great people):
Thanks for having me!

Comics, white tables and blueberries

August 6th, 2007

Yet another day of actually not playing any games.

I’m working my way through the hardback Marvel collection “Earth X“. Awesome story - but it’s a heavy book and you can actually feel the weight of it in your wrists after a while. Basically, you get to follow the last time of earth and humanity before it all goes under (I’m not done yet, so I don’t know how it will end). You get to follow an android called X-51 who is transported to the moon where “it” has to become the new Watcher. Uatu, the old Watcher, put on the moon to monitor the history of earth has gone blind the last 20 years or so, and X-51 becomes his new eyes. They are discussing the concept of humanity both when it comes to good and evil, politics, cause and effect, regret and power struggle. (During this conversation the reader gets to see what has happened to many of the old heroes and villains and how the world has changed because of their actions.)

A week ago I picked up Earth X, along with the beginning issues of the “Civil War” and “House of M” series.

I was a great fan of Marvel comics when I was a teenager (going through Spiderman, X-men, Daredevil and some Hulk and Fantastic Four). I’ve kind of abandoned the issue by issue approach though, and instead only aim for finished albums (I’ve done this with other comics as well - it’s just so space consuming to collect the individual issues). I still have binders with Spiderman and X-men all over the top shelves in the library at home and boxes with old Usagi Yojimbo, Groo and Bone comics. Of course I’ve bought most of these in collected albums instead, so I hardly ever open a single issue.

Anywho…
I haven’t really read Marvel comics for ages now, but suddenly felt compelled to grab some new ones - going for collections of alternative Marvel worlds or events. I actually think that it was DCs “Kingdom Come” (written by Mark Waid and wonderful art by Alex Ross) with a story about future superman and all the other great DC heroes - that kicked by old super heroes interest into gear again.
That and Neil Gaiman’s take on an alternative Marvel universe in “1602” and the revival of “Eternals“.

I feel that I ahve to say though that this post was supposed to start with me telling you what I really did today. Because, apart from reading some Earth X - and not playing games, I’ve been painting a kitchen table white (and putting it together while painting - it is the IKEA table “Ingo”). So now I have to wait 16 hours before doing the second layer of paint. Oh, and I also watched four episodes of “The 4400″ - and that was going to bring me into a post where I wanted to tell you about all the great TV-series I think are worth watching. I think I’ll put that in another post instead (this one is clearly about comics now).

While I’m on the subject of comics again, I just have to tell you that if you’ve read anything from Neil Gaiman, you should really go for the rest of it as well. If you want comics - go for the “Sandman” series - which are truly a work of pure art, and if you like the written word - aim for “Neverwhere”, “Stardust” and my favorites “American Gods” and “Anansi Boys”.
And now Stardust will enter the silver screen… I’m happy that someone tries to interpret Neils books into the movie media, but the trailers don’t look that good, yet. If, however, the movie will sell and bring in enough cash, the good part is that more of Neils original stories will turn into movies. Would be awesome to see American Gods as a movie. A really weird roadmovie.

And while I’m one the movie out of books (or comics) subject…
I’m actually proud to announce that I hadn’t read any Hellboy at all before the movie came out. I know I’d seen some issues and some books at my local book store, but I just never tried it out. After the movie however - I went nuts and got any Hellboy I could get my hands on. I simple love Mike Mignola’s really iconic drawing style, along with excellent stories (what can go wrong with monsters, cthulhu myths, mad scientists and power hungry nazis?). The mix between humour, hard sarcasm, mystery and action is superb!
I would also recommend the spin-off called “B.P.R.D” with good art by Guy Davis (and colors by Dave Stewart).

Back to today…
I didn’t just paint the table. I went out to get blueberries as well. Me and my wife (Sandra, if I haven’t mentioned her name before…) were out walking yesterday evening and found a couple of golden blueberry spots in the forest nearby, really close to the path too. So today we got a jar and picked a whole bunch for breakfast tomorrow. Big and blue ones. While out walking we also discovered two restaurants we’ve never seen before, looking really nice. Have to try them out sometime soon.

So I guess today ended up as a Comics post, which is kind of nice because I really want more people to read comics. Today there’re so many really great comics for adults so you should never really connect it purely to teenagers and kids.
And while I’m on that I read that Alan Moore’s and Dave Gibbons’ comic “Watchmen” is being turned into a movie. Zack Snyder is directing (the man behind Dawn of the Dead remake and 300) so the visual style will probably be awesome. Watchmen is, for the people out there not knowing this, a comic about a world after the heroes’ golden days are gone. It’s a world where the masked, tights wearing heroes have been questioned by the society and most of them have quit their vigilante lifestyle (threatened by lawsuits and angry mobs). Really good story there if you haven’t read it.

Finally…
it’s interesting that I always misspell have (ahve) and more (mroe). It’s uncanny - always, in every text. Makes me wonder if I perhaps should have a different keyboard setup.

That’s it.

Go put on yer tights and save the world!

Too many games…

August 4th, 2007

There are just too many games I want to play!

I just spent the last year or so working my ass off, cutting down painfully on my sparetime. Since I do have a wife and I really plan to stay married to Sandra for the rest of my life - I valued social life higher than playing computer games (the few precious hours where both of us were still awake).

Kudos to Nintendo both for the DS Lite and the Wii!
Even though I had so little time, I managed to first play on my DS going home from work (subway - taking about 30 minutes). I’ve subwayed my way through Brain Training (electronic Sudoku rules), Sonic, Mario Bros and Phoenix Wright - Ace Attorney. And then, when I get home late in the evening, I spent 30 minutes wacking away imaginary balls with an imaginary baseball bat with my Wii Sports (rounding off with some boxing if I felt like taking a shower before bed).

That was probably how I survived my way through the dark winter months, still being sane when we delivered GRAW2 (Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter… 2 - just slap in a “Tom Clancy’s” first as well and you’ve got one of the longer computer game names in history).

However, now when I’ve got “all the time in the world” - also known as vacation - I simple can’t just sit down and play through a game. I want to play so many!
The past weeks I’ve been shopping my way to happiness by buying a whole batch of games.

  • I bought “Company of Heroes” on steam, for my new macbook pro (my new baby - so silvery shiny!) just because I felt I had abandoned that game after many hours of multiplayer gameplay during the beta period. Love it, although I started up the campaign on hard and then found mysefl stuck a couple of missions in. I think this mission actually demand some strategy and planning… something I will give it soon.
  • I also got “Metroid Prime 2” for the gamecube (which I’ve just started playing on my Wii, along with a new mem card and a controller). Really good game, with a clean structure - I’m totally hooked on the idea - but I just can’t give it the hours it needs (since there are so many other games I want to play…)
  • So, Metroid Prime 2 convinced me to go and get “Metroid Prime: Hunters” for the DS only a couple of days ago. I played the first planet in bed before going to sleep that same evening (hearing my wife breathe slowly by my side). Loved it! After I had cracked and bent my fingers into a comfortable control setup, with the lefty slightly holding the DS, balancing on my knees in front of me, and the stylus in my right hand - flipping ammo, switching visor, ball transforming and jumping around. I got really into it and cursed the damn bounty hunter who was running around in his green suit, trying to kill me.
  • (Hmm, Perhaps I should start giving the games I play some kind of rating… Oh we’ll see if I feel that’s interesting…)

  • So, as you read earlier I played some “Phoenix Wright” earlier this spring. This reopened my eyes for the simple gameplay mechanics of text based and point-and-click games again. With text, a bunch of good looking stills and a fun story - a game can go far on the DS.

I had read tons of good reviews about a similar game, but with even better graphics - “Hotel Dusk: Room 215“. I got it at the same time as I picked up a copy of hunters. Played it for a couple of hours yesterday, while doing the laundry - and I must say, it’s a really good visual style and some really good base mechanics going there. Problem with Phoenix Wright was that after a while the player discovers that he can’t really change the story anything, so it turns into a really linear game (and gets boring after a while). I guess Hotel Dusk could suffer from the same drawbacks, but so far I’ve had some choices and the story is still mysterious enough for me. So, not bored yet. Also, I must say I really like that you play it like a “book”, holding the DS flipped 90 degrees, and that the cutscene-like sections, the movement and the interaction are played using both screens in very interesting ways.

  • Okay.
So those are the new games.
Apart from those I’ve kind of already started playing Final Fantasy XII (being about 25 hours into the plot), Shadow of the Colossus (5 boss fights into the game) and Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Wii (Got a horse and been riding through the village, so I only have about 15 minutes worth of real gameplay there).

    So what should I do?!
There’re just too many games going for now and I really like them all. The DS games have the upper hand due to the fact that I take them with me if I go into town or have something I ahve to wait for at home. Out of those, I think Hotel Dusk wins for now, since it doesn’t have as complicated controls setup as Metroid.

And while going here, having trouble deciding - I now await Settlers and the new Zelda for the DS, and of course “Little Big Planet”, which is the game that will motivate me into buying a PS3, for real (which in turn will motivate me into buying a better TV!).

But life is even more complicated than that. As if the games competing with each other about hogging my time - I’ve also become addicted to a couple of TV-series…

..But that is a whole new story.

    Over and out!

    Lögner och klavertramp

    August 4th, 2007

    Over and out.

    First post (and language issues…)

    August 3rd, 2007

This is my first blog post, ever. From now on I’m going to post in swedish - since I live in Sweden. I know the rest of the site is in english, but in order to actually be able to write just about anything, I think the native language will be the best thing.

    For now atleast.

Will be interesting to see what turns up here.
